RAF Role

The Royal Air Force’s role, in conjunction with the Defence organisations, is to deliver the UK Defence Vision:

  • Defend the UK and its interests.
  • Strengthen international peace and stability.
  • Be a force for good in the world.

We achieve this aim by working together on our core task to produce battle-winning people and equipment. The Royal Air Force will build upon the successes of our past and on the characteristics that make air power essential across the full spectrum of operations in order to contribute to the Defence Vision. Our people lie at the heart of this capability. We rely upon their professionalism, dedication and courage. We must train them well and enable them to leverage the potential of technology to achieve our vision of:

'An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission.’

We are recruiting now for more than 60 different career opportunities in the RAF. Contact our Manchester Office now on 0161 832 5822 or visit www.rafcareers.com

“My name is Danni. I’m from Rainhill near Liverpool. At the beginning of this year, I decided to join the Royal Air Force. My transition from civilian life to military life started at my local Armed Forces Career Office. They gave me all the information I needed in order to choose the right career. The trade I chose was the RAF police. I then sat selection tests, attended a medical, completed a fitness test then attended an interview. Successful, my training was about to start.

Basic training began for me in February of this year, at Royal Air Force Halton. It tested me both, mentally and physically, at times pushing me to my limits. Whether it was working hard in one of the many fitness sessions, cramming for exams in ground defence training, learning weapon handling and survival techniques or even preparing kit for the next day’s inspection. Everyday was different, teaching me everything I need to know. Recruit training helped build my self confidence, developed my ability to work within a team and gave me a sense of discipline.

During training, I met some amazing people, recruits and staff alike. I’ve made some friends that I’ll know for the rest of my life. Colleagues and staff, together they definitely get you through it. You can’t fault the help and support you are given throughout the entire course, from the day you walk into the AFCO, to the day you graduate.

Recruit training is tough, but it’s exciting. I had never experienced anything like it before. Looking back now I’m very proud of what I have achieved. It’s made me the individual I am today; I now look forward to my second phase of training, then embarking on what I hope to be a very long career in the Royal Air Force.”
