Job Description
The School of Physics and Astronomy, one of the largest physics departments in UK including Jodrell Bank Observatory, invites applications for a Coded Welder / Mechanical Services Technician to join the Mechanical Workshop Team based in the Schuster Building. The equipment manufactured for use in connection with the School's research and teaching activities frequently requires accurate machining to close tolerances in a variety of materials, including mild stainless steel, aluminium and brass, and used in experimental conditions such as high vacuum, radioactivity and very low temperatures in laboratories and national facilities in UK and around the world.
Successful applicant will posses a high level of welding skills in a variety of techniques (including MIG, TIG, Gas, metal cutting, brazing and fabrication) and satisfy welder approval tests in relation to EN ISO15614 and ASME IX. In addition, he/she will either possess machining skills or be willing to undergo appropriate training in order to acquire them to compliment their welding expertise.
The post is available for a fixed term of 12 months from March 2010.
